Wonder People is a game developer that creates great games that will change the world. We are continuing to grow steadily by producing and servicing various mobile, PC, and online games, including ‘Mega Hit Poker’. Currently, the battle royale game ‘Super People’ is about to be released. ‘Super People’ is a global game serviced not only in Korea but also in North America, Europe, and Japan, and has been receiving a lot of interest and response since the beta testing stage.


Challenge
[Infrastructure Team]
The Wonder People Infrastructure Team supports overall infrastructure management and DevOps required for game development and testing. Previously, the test environment was configured using 20 to 30 physical servers. However, as the amount of data to be processed increased, server management and response to failures began to take a lot of time. To solve this problem, it was necessary not only to increase the number of physical servers, but also to respond in terms of the network. However, if the necessary network was built directly, the cost was expected to be astronomical. Accordingly, we decided to adopt the cloud to manage our infrastructure more efficiently at a reasonable cost.

Wonder People Data Lab Team is a newly established team that specializes in collecting, loading, and analyzing log data to improve user experience and analyze data. However, in the existing on-premises environment, importing and processing large amounts of log data was expensive and very inefficient. So, in order to reliably manage all log data generated by the game, we decided to build a full-scale data pipeline and introduce the cloud.

We conducted a PoC to compare several cloud platforms and selected Google Cloud as the easiest and most reasonable in terms of usability, cost, and data utilization. Currently, Wonder People is using various services of Google Cloud, such as Compute Engine, Cloud Load Balancing, and BigQuery, as well as Google Workspace.

[Infrastructure Team]
We are sequentially migrating internal infrastructure, including in-house test servers, to Google Cloud. After introducing Google Cloud, the time required to manage servers and respond to failures has been reduced, and issues that occur outside of work hours can now be managed remotely, enabling much faster responses. The physical limitations of existing servers are eliminated, allowing for more efficient infrastructure management.
The biggest advantage of Google Cloud is that the UI is user-friendly and the developer documentation is well organized, making it very easy to use. Even if you are not familiar with the cloud, you can adapt quickly and employee satisfaction is very high. Additionally, it is directly integrated with Google Workspace, making setting up cloud permissions very easy. Since you only need a Google Workspace account without having to create a separate cloud account, user management and project manager identification are much faster and easier.

We built a data pipeline that collects and loads in-game logs using various features of Google Cloud, including BigQuery. In the existing on-premise DB, it sometimes took up to over an hour to query data, but after introducing BigQuery, the data query speed became 60 times faster. Currently, data inquiry using the same query can be processed in an average of 1 minute, and 300Mb of log data per second can be processed.

This was my first attempt at both using cloud services and building a data pipeline, and Bespin Global was of great help by providing various references and guides as well as various trainings needed to build a data pipeline. Additionally, during the recent Super People Global CBT (Private Beta Test), 10 times more data than expected flowed in, causing a brief pipeline issue. At this time, Bespin Global responded quickly, so we were able to resolve the problem more quickly.
After Super People is officially launched, it is expected that more users will come in and log data will increase accordingly. We are currently upgrading our data pipeline so that we can quickly provide the necessary data without problems even as the amount of data increases. In this process, we are building a more scalable pipeline with the help of Bespin Global, and we plan to continue to develop the data pipeline so that it can be utilized in a wider range of services in the future.
