‘Easy and fun IT news’ Outstanding is an IT specialized media company that publishes trends and knowledge content in various fields such as the IT industry, startups, organizational management/operations, careers, and marketing. Unlike established media, it is characterized by providing services optimized for online, from content creation to content distribution and business models. Outstanding is based on three values: reader priority, online content, and respect for creators in order to produce high-quality content that readers can read in a friendly manner. Content created in this way is distributed through Outstanding’s own web pages and mobile apps, rather than through print or external platforms. In terms of business model, we have been providing a paid subscription model since the service was launched in 2015. Individual as well as group subscriptions are available, and membership members can use a variety of services, including general articles, newsletters, corporate analysis data database, communities, and offline events. In this way, Outstanding continues to grow, reaching a re-subscription rate of over 90% by providing quality content, distributing content appropriate for the digital environment, and creating a business model.
Challenge
Reflecting the trend of most readers consuming news on PC and mobile devices, Outstanding has been thoroughly pursuing ‘online-ness’ from the beginning. We publish online content using various emoticons, images, videos, etc. only through our own web page and mobile app. Therefore, in order to provide Outstanding’s services reliably, it is important to properly manage the IT infrastructure that forms the basis of online content. In particular, Outstanding needed a more efficient way to manage infrastructure because one developer is responsible for the development and operation of all IT areas, including web pages, administrator pages, subscription and payment systems, in-house systems, and infrastructure.
We chose AWS because we believed it to be the most used cloud platform worldwide. One of the reasons for using AWS is that there are many references and guides, so you can quickly find the information you need even when you have a problem or question. In addition, to increase productivity, we utilize various SaaS (Software as a Service) such as Google Workspace, Datadog, Zapier, and JANDI.

All of Outstanding’s infrastructure environments are comprised of AWS. By utilizing the various cloud services provided by AWS, we have reduced the time and cost of infrastructure operation. We are using Amazon EC2 and AWS ElasticBeanstalk to build the web server, and Amazon Aurora to manage the database. AWS Elastic Beanstalk allows you to quickly deploy and manage applications in the AWS Cloud. Both Amazon Aurora and AWS ElasticBeanstalk automatically recover from failures and can be replaced on-the-fly when performance needs to scale. We use Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) and Amazon CloudFront for image management. Amazon EFS also automatically expands or contracts storage, allowing you to manage it conveniently and efficiently without worrying about image capacity.
