Company Overview
Hyundai Department Store currently operates 15 department stores and 6 outlets across the country, leading the shopping culture in each region. In addition, it is growing into a comprehensive lifestyle and culture company such as duty-free shops, home shopping, Hyundai Green Food, Hyundai Livart, and Dream Tour.
The Situation
In August 2017, we launched ‘H.Point’, a service that integrates the services of the Hyundai Department Store Group, to build an analysis platform based on integrated membership and strengthen customer experience to maximize synergy between affiliates. Due to the nature of membership, a system that can flexibly respond to marketing and data analysis tasks was required, and there were difficulties in purchasing, managing, and operating dedicated equipment in a situation where dedicated IT personnel were not sufficient. In particular, when purchasing equipment by predicting a period of 4 to 5 years, excessive initial investment may occur, so we considered a cloud service that can secure and increase storage space whenever necessary.
The Result
Through Amazon Redshift, AWS’s managed data warehouse, we took advantage of the easily scalable structure, fast performance, minimized management points through managed services, and the ability to have multiple servers to choose from. It took about 7 months to build an AWS-based data warehouse and started full-scale operation in January 2019. An internal review of total costs over the next five years found that savings of more than 30% were possible compared to on-premise approaches. Bespin Global supports the establishment and operation of a data warehouse.

Next step
Hyundai Department Store is considering applying Amazon Kinesis and AWS Lambda for location information linked marketing, and is reviewing Amazon SageMaker for personalized service.
In addition, we plan to use big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and advanced analysis for marketing activities. Head of Hyundai IT&E’s overall IT operation, Oh Seok-geul, said, “AWS’ application, support, and underlying technology exceeded expectations, and we need a cloud-oriented strategy and approach when planning new business in the future.” .
