Company Overview
K2 Korea operates outdoor brands ‘K2’ and ‘Eider’, golf wear brands ‘Wide Angle’ and ‘Pireti’, sports brand ‘Dyna Fit’, and safety shoe brands ‘K2 Safety’ and ‘Eider Safety’. is Korea’s representative comprehensive fashion company. Recently, we launched the emotional lifestyle outdoor brand ‘Nordisk’. Based on our outstanding technology, we release a variety of products with new styles and competitiveness every season. Currently, it operates an integrated online shopping mall ‘K.VILLAGE’ with over 1,000 stores nationwide and continues to grow, with sales exceeding KRW 1 trillion.
Challenge
K2 Korea operated all of its infrastructure on-premise in the early stages of its business, but began to introduce the cloud in earnest in 2018. We are currently building and operating a hybrid cloud that uses both on-premise servers and the cloud, and a multi-cloud environment that utilizes multiple cloud platforms . The database (DB) uses an on-premise server, and operating systems such as Web/WAS, excluding the DB, use the cloud. AWS and Oracle Cloud (OCI) are used as cloud platforms.
Solution
“K2 Korea first introduced AWS cloud infrastructure to build an RFID system in 2018, and is building an integrated shopping mall through AWS in 2022 and operating it stably. And recently, K2 Korea’s ERP system has been converted from on-premise to Oracle Cloud. In this way, K2 Korea is focusing on providing services that satisfy customers by utilizing multi-cloud.”
– Moon Ki-seok, Director of K2 Korea IT Department
[AWS] Establishment of RFID and product usability evaluation system
K2 Korea has been using RFID (radio frequency identification technology) since 2018 . RFID is a technology that identifies product information by attaching an electronic chip with a unique code to each product. Currently, the history of all K2 Korea brand products is managed through RFID. Because you can easily view and manage all product history, from production to receipt, shipment, sales, and CS, it is possible to streamline costs related to inventory tracking and logistics loading.
Additionally, K2 Korea Shoe Research Institute regularly conducts field usability evaluations to create better products. Users selected as testers wear the product and evaluate and analyze its functionality in an actual outdoor environment. Previously, test results were recorded and collected in paper documents, making it difficult to organize and manage numerous documents. Therefore, we converted the existing manual usability evaluation survey to an online platform .
Our RFID and product usability evaluation system has been built and operated from the ground up on the AWS Cloud. Thanks to the use of the cloud, it is possible to operate stably without having to manage the infrastructure separately, and can flexibly expand depending on the situation, which is convenient and satisfying. In addition, the integrated online shopping mall is also operated based on AWS, and most of the existing on-premise server environment is being moved to the cloud.
[OCI] Company-wide ERP system migration
K2 Korea’s ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) combines in-house business management such as accounting, human resources, planning, and sales, as well as POS, RFID, and WMS (warehouse management) at over 1,000 stores nationwide. As a frequently used and highly important system, it was rebuilt in 2014 and was configured and operated based on IDC. However, as time passed and servers began to age, the time came to replace them.
We considered purchasing a new server, but after much deliberation, we decided to adopt a hybrid cloud infrastructure. We were using AWS for other system operations, but considering performance, stability, and cost, we decided that it would be more reasonable to introduce a new cloud platform rather than using only one cloud platform. Accordingly, we chose OCI after a thorough PoC (Proof of Concept).
In an on-premises environment, expanding performance required continuous purchase of additional servers, which was costly and time consuming. After migrating to OCI, we were able to immediately expand when performance was insufficient, ensuring flexibility and agility so that there would be no problems for internal employees, offline stores, and business partners who use ERP.
Benefits of Oracle Cloud
- Supports easy workload migration with out-of-the-box virtualization, custom security chips, and more
- Provides a variety of OCI platforms and development services for building modern cloud native applications
- Provides autonomous operation service that automatically secures, tunes, and expands applications
- Effective hybrid cloud support through Oracle public region and private region, VMware, etc.
- Supports building a strong security environment by providing cloud security services and security tools as standard
- Competitive pricing policy and a variety of cloud operation services available at no additional cost
